A stable earth (also called 'ground') is an absolute essential for optimum sounding audio. Directly or indirectly, the earth is the zero volts
point that all the system components reference their signals from. If there is noise or disturbance on the earth between pieces of equipment,
then this will be imposed on the signal and add to it; the audio signal voltage will become clean signal audio signal + random earth 'noise'; Even
small background noise adversely effects audio and causes drastic image loss. It is therefore paramount that all the pieces in your system refer
back to a single, noise free, stable ground. |

As a good earth system is so essential for best hi-fi performance, and because earthing, screening and cabling are so closely inter-linked, it is important to take a step back from individual bits of kit and power conditioners, and take to check that the system is integrated as a whole to achieve the optimum performance. This means making a detailed plan of the earths, the screens, power distribution and cabling system. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||

The next step is to optimising the scheme to ensure that everything is safely earthed and that there are no hum loops or other causes of interference on the earth, so the system works as a whole and allow your system components to perform without hindrance. There are some fundamental rules about this, but as it is important to understand earthing topology, we will be including a special detailed section on earthing topology which will be launched on June 1st 2008. Meanwhile you are welcome to contact us with any queries you may have (cable@movingair.info). Please include as much information as possible with your enquiry. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCE should a mains safety earth be removed to reduce noise or hum or for any other reason. If in doubt, seek suitable qualified advice. [To next page] |
